High-Handed In Highland Park

posted on May 7, 2015

In 2013, the Illinois General Assembly rewrote state law to allow gun owners to obtain concealed-carry permits—all good, as far as it went. The legislation also provided a short window to prohibit assault weapons at the municipal level, and though there were few takers, ritzy Highland Park was one.

Challenged by a local resident and the Illinois State Rifle Association, the ban was unfortunately upheld in a 2-1 decision by 7th Circuit in late April. In effect, this means that other municipalities can now be flooded with hysterical propaganda and anti-gun money one at a time, and Second Amendment rights re-confiscated in Illinois piece by local piece.

“This is about local control,” Morrison opined this week. You bet it is: control of law-abiding citizens—but not of the criminals who will continue to break any and every law Morrison pens.
