Every 58 minutes. That’s how often someone was shot and either killed or wounded during a 20-hour span in Chicago from Tuesday to early Wednesday of this week. One person an hour claimed by the city’s out-of-control violence. “Why, why, why?” asked one bystander.

The “why” is a question we’ve addressed before, and the answer can be traced back to Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Rather than examine his own policies and biases, he and other anti-gun politicians are pointing their fingers at gun owners and federally licensed gun dealers outside of the city and blaming them for supplying guns to criminals in Chicago. Frank Miniter dispels that myth here.

So as the carnage continues—a 21-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man were the latest casualties—Windy City residents can only hope that city leaders will honestly address the many problems on its streets before it’s too late for the next victims.
