President Might Begin “Smart Gun” Push

posted on April 26, 2016

A new media report out yesterday says the Barack Obama administration is preparing to begin a push on the so-called “smart gun” initiative that was part of the president’s January executive actions on firearms.

The Times Union newspaper reported that further action could come within days on the president’s plan to expedite real-world application of the technology, which to date has been tested but remains completely unproven.

NRA Spokeswoman Catherine Mortensen reiterated the stance that the Association certainly isn’t anti-technology, but opposes unproven technology mandated by government. “If your life is on the line, do you want to depend on the same technology you use to access your smartphone?” she said. “We don’t complain about anything developed in the free market that people choose to buy, but we don’t want mandates or prohibitions.”
