Did D.C. Order Cops To Ignore A Federal Court Order?

When The Federalist’s Devin Watkins recently read of U.S. District Judge Richard Leon’s temporary injunction against D.C.’s requirement that residents show “good cause” before being issued a carry permit, he went to submit his application. He then wrote about what happened next: “The police officers there told me the D.C. attorney general’s office had ordered them to ignore the court order and continue to deny applications.” Watkins then contacted the AG’s office, who told him he could file a complaint online.

Watkins told Reason.com that the receiving officer “strongly implied that his lack of listing the ‘good reason’ meant he would be denied.”

When Watkins broke the story, the AG’s office released a denial, saying they “would not instruct any officer of the district government to ignore any court order.” They also posted a clarification online, saying they “will not require applicants to comport with the ‘Good Reason’ requirement … while the injunction is effective.”
