Missoula, Mont., Residents, Voice Your Opposition To Anti-Gun Ordinance TODAY

posted on September 24, 2016

On Sept. 26, the Missoula, Mont., City Council is set to hear a proposal that would require background checks on all gun sales and transfers (with limited exceptions).

The fact that this ordinance would apply only to Missoula puts it in direct violation of state firearms pre-emption laws, which prohibit municipalities from passing their own rules and regulations. The resulting patchwork of laws this measure would create could easily make criminals out of law-abiding citizens, and the penalties are stiff: Violators could be subject to a fine of up to $500, a misdemeanor conviction, and the possibility of up to six months in jail. Meanwhile, actual criminals would pay no more attention to this law than they do any other.

USE YOUR POWER!

Montana residents are strongly encouraged to voice their opposition to the measure at the upcoming Missoula City Council hearing, which will take place on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at the City Council Chambers, located at 140 West Pine Street in Missoula. Regardless of whether you can make it to the hearing, please contact your councilmembers now to be added to the public record in opposition to the proposed anti-gun measure. You can contact them here.
