Virginia Pro-Gun Bills Await Governor’s Consideration

posted on March 2, 2017

Will Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe rule in favor of women who are living under a protective order and fearful for their lives? We’ll find out this month as the governor has a bill on his desk for consideration that would enable people under such an order to carry a concealed handgun for 45 days. That would provide enough time to apply for a concealed-carry permit.

Senate Bill 1299Senate Bill 1300 and House Bill 1852, sponsored by Republican state Sen. Jill Holtzman Vogel and Republican Delegate Todd Gilbert, were proposed to help potential victims of domestic violence defend themselves. “I think experience tells us that when faced with imminent danger, you can only rely on yourself,” said Republican state Sen. Richard H. Black.

Also on Gov. McAuliffe’s desk is Senate Bill 1023, which would prohibit the sharing of information regarding Virginia concealed handgun permits in states that don’t recognize those permits.
