Wisconsin Supreme Court Strikes Down Madison Bus Carry Ban

posted on March 9, 2017

The Wisconsin Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that Madison Transit’s ban on carrying a firearm on Madison County buses is illegal and must be ended.

Since 2005, passengers have been forced to disarm when traveling on Madison buses, despite the fact that state law pre-empts such a prohibition by local municipalities. The 5-2 ruling affirmed the right of law-abiding passengers to carry a firearm for self-defense on those buses.

As NRA-ILA pointed out in a recent update, individuals who choose to use public transportation or are unable to travel in private conveyance should not be prevented from carrying a firearm for self-defense. With the state Supreme Court’s recent decision, this illegal prohibition that unnecessarily disarmed law-abiding individuals is thankfully coming to an end.
