President Donald Trump called James Shaw Jr. this week to commend him for his successful disarming of an active shooter near a Waffle House restaurant in Nashville, Tenn.

Shaw had been eating in the restaurant when suspect Travis Reinking started his rampage. He killed four people and injured three others before Shaw saw an opening and charged at the killer, wrestling the rifle from his hands.

While Trump had previously lauded Shaw’s heroism, Monday’s call was the first contact the president had with the Tennessee electrician.
