5.11 Tactical Offers Dual-Purpose Backpack

If you’ve ever grown tired of the prospect of having to lug your entire backpack around, but you still relish the idea of having a way to keep your ID and gun close at hand, take a look at 5.11 Tactical’s Mira 2-in-1 Pack. It’s a 25-liter pack with a twist—or should we say, with a hook.

The main feature that sets this apart is that you can unhook the front pouch and use a provided shoulder strap to carry it across your body. The detachable pouch includes a concealed-carry compartment that is secured with a magnetic closure, so there’s little chance of your gun falling out accidentally. And there’s room for your keys, wallet and more—all of which are kept separate from the gun pocket.

Some would tout it as a range bag, and it would serve that purpose well. But it also shines as a great outdoors carry-all. If you’re on a camping trip, for example, and you just want to take a short out-and-back hike from your campsite, you can just take the detachable pouch and you won’t be defenseless against bears and such.

The front pouch attaches and separates from the main pack with just a couple of metal hooks and connectors to the seam.

5.11 Tactical offers the pack in an array of colors—from basic black, to a couple of camouflage patterns, to shark (pictured here) and dark green. No matter the color choice, you’ll get a fully functional pack that is sure to meet every need.

The water-resistant material will help guard against the weather (or missteps during creek crossings) and the inside is set up with compartments that help you keep some things separate and thus easy to access. It includes a padded pouch for eye protection, whether you’re headed to the shooting range or out in the glaring sunlight.

The pack is constructed with padded shoulder straps. It includes two external mesh pockets for water bottles. And, of course, the exterior is covered in MOLLE webbing so you can hang almost anything on the outside of the pack.

All told, the designers got it right. The Mira 2-in-1 has an MSRP of $129.99, and you’ll get your money’s worth.
