NRA Country is a fan of all country music, from icons like Charlie Daniels to more current artists like Lee Brice. Some days it simply feels good to put on a classic album with a few hits that take you back to a time and place many years ago. Doug Stone’s albums do just that. He first debuted in 1990 with the hit “I’d Be Better Off (In a Pine Box)” and went on to have eight #1 singles, two Platinum albums, two Gold albums and a Grammy nomination. What many country music fans don’t know is that Stone is an avid outdoorsman. NRA Country’s Vanessa Shahidi asked Stone a few questions about some of his passions.

VS: Who taught you how to shoot?
DS: I’ve been around guns my whole life. I had BB guns when I was young and when I turned 10, my daddy taught me how to shoot a .22 single-shot bolt-action rifle. I was 12 years old running around and getting lost in the woods. I thought I was really something, but I was never afraid because I knew I would be able to defend myself.

VS: Do you have a favorite personal firearm?
DS: My favorite would probably have to be my AR-15. It’s a compact gun that shoots very accurately. It comes in handy around the farm taking care of snakes, hogs and other Texas varmints.

VS: One of your daughters served in the military. What does her service mean to you?
DS: It made me so proud as her father to see her serve in the Army. It really opened her life up to all kinds of possibilities, and she’s done very well for herself. I don’t come from much of a military family but I’ve always held great respect for anyone who has served or is currently serving this great country. Without them, our nation would cease to exist as we know it.

VS: Tell us what you’re currently working on and excited about.
DS: I recently released an album paying tribute to my mother called “Mama’s Songbook.” It’s all of the songs she used to sing when I was a kid—old Ray Price and Don Gibson material. Right now I’m working on a gospel album. I’ll be 4 years sober this coming July, and my renewed faith has played a huge part in that. I just want to share the Word with everyone. God, Guns & Country—that’s what it’s all about!
