1. Heill Ok Sæll
Do you really need a tactical ax to be “heill ok sæll” (happy and healthy)? Probably not. But, besides letting you channel your inner Viking, they are useful, especially when camping. For safety, this CRKT Skeggox ax sports a full-tang blade and a MOLLE-compatible thermoplastic sheath and sheath strap. For utility, it’s designed with a carbon-steel blade that’s powder-coated to prevent corrosion and a contoured, glass-reinforced nylon handle to keep it light but strong. Local pillaging restrictions still apply. (crkt.com; $120)

2. Secure Your Safe
Here’s another smart product I found while wandering the floor at NRA Annual Meetings this year: a small button sensor that immediately alerts you if your safe door is moved. The Regal Products SecureMe (previously “TagMe”) Base Station & Stick-On Beacon starter kit comes with one Bluetooth sensor, one plug-in base station and access to the phone app for alerts. Each base station can pair with up to 10 sensors; so, since this extra layer of protection is a must-have for me as a parent, I’ll be acquiring one for each safe in my home. (regalisi.com; $99 starter package)

3. Super Lightweight Portable Safe
There’s no need to haul a heavy safe on your travels and to potentially have to deal with rundown batteries when you go to access it later. The Streamlight Speedlocker is one of the most lightweight portable safes of its size and its five-button programmable keypad lock, which allows up to 31 combinations, is entirely mechanical. (streamlight.com; $165)

After Ryan Petty lost his 14-year-old daughter, Alaina, to a 19-year-old mass murderer in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018 in Parkland, Fla., he wanted to know what happened.
