Mexico wants the United States to ban guns ... again.
Speaking at a United Nations event on Monday, Mexico’s Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu called on the U.S. Congress to ban so-called “assault weapons,” claiming that “they cause harm on both sides of the border.”
In a speech to the Second Conference of States Parties to the Arms Trade Treaty of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, Ruiz Massieu claimed that buying a gun in the United States is as easy as buying “a liter of milk or a box of cereal.”
Portraying Mexico as the victim of Americans’ Second Amendment freedoms, Massieu claimed that allowing U.S. citizens to purchase semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15 “gives transnational criminal organizations enormous firepower.”
Then, to seal the deal, Ruiz Massieu claimed that out of the 40,000 guns, 4,000 grenades and 5.6 million rounds of ammunition seized by Mexican authorities between December 2012 and July 2016, some 70 percent of them supposedly originated in the U.S.
If it seems like you’ve seen this movie before, it’s because you have. And this is just Act One of their latest deceitful charade.
Remember, in 2009, scarcely 90 days into his first term, President Obama claimed, “More than 90 percent of the guns recovered in Mexico come from the United States, many from gun shops that line our shared border.”
As if on cue, within days, Hillary Clinton and Obama’s attorney general, Eric Holder, and others were parroting the 90 percent statistic as if reading from a script.
If it seems like you’ve seen this movie before, it’s because you have.The problem was, it wasn’t true. It wasn’t 90 percent. And it wasn’t even close to 90 percent.
As Stratfor pointed out, “Almost 90 percent of the guns seized in Mexico in 2008 were not traced back to the United States.”
Indeed, in July, 2009, Bill McMahon, deputy assistant director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) testified before Congress that only 8 percent of the weapons recovered in Mexico came through licensed U.S. firearm dealers.
Fox News investigated the story and estimated that possibly 17 percent of the guns came from the United States.
The problems with the 90 percent statistic were myriad. First of all, the Mexican government didn’t submit every gun it seized to the ATF for tracing. Indeed, the only guns the Mexicans did submit for tracing by the ATF were guns that they were already fairly sure had come from the United States.
So the truth was lost somewhere in their crooked methodology. But whatever the actual number was, it was clear it was nowhere even close to 90 percent.
Nonetheless, Obama, Clinton and the rest of the liars stuck to their guns and continued to recite the discredited sound bite.
But even if you ignore all their bogus statistics, their “reasoning”—or sales pitch—is just as corrupt today as it was seven years ago.
For one thing, guns are already effectively illegal in Mexico. The entire country has just one gun store, run by the Mexican Army, and unless you’re Fidel’s brother-in-law or Antonio’s business partner—or one of the drug cartels armed by the Mexican military—you don’t get a gun.
Moreover, smuggling guns to Mexico is also already illegal in both countries (unless, apparently, the Obama administration does the smuggling).Indeed, the only guns the Mexicans did submit for tracing by the ATF were guns that they were already fairly sure had come from the United States.
Furthermore, smuggling drugs into the United States is already illegal in both countries (unless, apparently, the Mexican military is involved).
Considering that Mexico’s murder rate is four times higher than that of the United States, maybe what Mexico should be doing is emulating the United States, not trying to make the U.S. more like Mexico.
Instead of chastising the United States for protecting the God-given right of lawful citizens to fight back to protect themselves, maybe Mexico should get its own house in order—by going after the drug cartels and allowing lawful citizens the right of armed self-defense.
This whole thing is a charade.
In light of the fact that Mexico’s international organized criminal syndicates are armed with everything from grenade launchers to heavy machine guns and more, to even suggest that drug cartel armorers are sneaking into the U.S. and submitting to background checks to buy semi-automatic rifles in mom-and-pop gun shops in the United States, and sneaking them back across the border, is absurd.
To suggest that banning guns in the United States will have any effect whatsoever on the epidemic of murder, torture and mayhem in Mexico is beyond absurd.
And to demand that the American people be deprived of their Second Amendment right to own firearms to defend themselves from those very same criminals goes beyond dishonest to outright malicious.
Nonetheless, if past is prologue, you can bet that any day now, as if on cue, Clinton, Obama and the rest of the freedom-blaming, gun-banning Democrats in this country will pick up and parrot the same crooked statistics and corrupt reasoning that Mexico’s foreign minister used this week to demand new gun bans here in the United States.
