We guess it’s a good thing that Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy are announcing the forming of a new hiring pool for more police officers in the crime-ridden Windy City. The city will accept 12,500 new applications, as the previous batch (of 19,000 from 2013) is now exhausted.

Of course, the city leaders, who are hard at work expanding the police force, are striving with even more devotion to disarm law-abiding citizens wherever possible with a nightmarish maze of red tape. We see what happens—even in Chicago—when good people arm themselves. So while putting more good cops on the streets is a wise strategy, criminals would have far more to fear from an armed and self-confident citizenry.
