The Armed Citizen

A man in Houston, Texas, was taking money out of a cash machine on April 15 when an armed man suddenly came around a corner and demanded money. The customer was complying, but the robber nonetheless began to pistol-whip him, according to reports. Fortunately, an armed citizen driving by witnessed the incident and quickly engaged the would-be robber with his own firearm, striking him in the leg and foot. The suspect was taken to the hospital and no one else was harmed in the incident. Law-enforcement officials told reporters the suspect was also wanted for murder in Louisiana. On May 6, a woman and man were inside a home in Nacogdoches, Texas, when a man began knocking, then used a large metal object to break down the door. Once inside, the invader continued the attack and broke down the bedroom door, whereupon the man in the residence fatally shot him. The residents immediately called authorities and cooperated fully; no charges were filed against the armed citizen, though the case was still under review. (ketk.com, Tyler, Texas, 5/6/23)

Three suspects in Dallas, Texas, allegedly pointed guns at a man at a gas station on May 10 in an attempted carjacking. However, the car owner was armed and shot at the men, striking two of the three. The suspects fled in another car, apparently with one man’s feet still hanging out as they sped off and drove to a hospital, where one suspect died. The other two sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were expected to recover. No one else was injured and the investigation was ongoing. (wfaa.com, Dallas, Texas, 5/10/23)

Gun Skills | Press Check

Back when I was a new gun owner, I drilled in a habit of checking to be sure my firearm was unloaded, which was also a terrific opportunity to work on gun-handling skills like racking the action and activating the controls.

The Incomparable, Inimitable Phil Schreier—1962-2025

The NRA took a serious hit on December 28th. We lost Phil Schreier, director of NRA Museums. He did everything the doctors asked of him and then some. But it wasn’t enough. Leukemia won, and we all lost.

No More Tax on Suppressors!

When President Donald Trump (R) signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB) into law on July 4, 2025, he scheduled the end of the burdensome $200 excise tax imposed on suppressors, short-barreled firearms and “any other weapons” as defined by the National Firearms Act (NFA). That end came on January 1.

Armed Citizens are the “Rugged Individualists” Mamdani Despises

In his inauguration speech as the new mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani said, behind his characteristically easy smile, “We will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.”
