Competitive shooter Tony Holmes was asked: What is the best tip you could give a new shooter?

“You don’t have to break the bank. Any stock firearm will get you started and in the game. Add a holster, a couple of magazine pouches, some extra magazines, ammunition and you’re ready. Go to your local range and ask for someone who is involved and experienced at your local range to walk you through the safety aspects and equipment needed for a match you may want to shoot. You need to walk before you run, just like most things in life. Learning how safely handle any firearm is paramount and in time, the speed will come. Learn to be accurate and hit what you aim at; investing in taking a few classes from a professional will also minimize developing any bad habits. Then it’s practice, practice and more practice. You get what you put into it when it comes to shooting competitively.”

Tony started competing in 1974 at the age of 13 in NRA High-Power and Small-bore Rifle matches. Throughout Tony’s professional competitive shooting career, he has consistently proven himself as a top competitor in a variety of shooting disciplines, which includes IPSC, Action Pistol, Long-Range Silhouette Rifle. But its 3-Gun that remains his favorite shooting discipline.

President’s Column | NRA Focus On The Vision

I can’t believe it’s been seven months since I was elected NRA president, and I’m already composing my eighth President’s Column. The officers never fully anticipated or appreciated the immense challenges we faced when elected.

Standing Guard | The NRA is Strong

The strength of the NRA is, and has always been, our membership. Without our millions of members, we would not be able to effectively rally behind elections for pro-freedom politicians; just as importantly, if not for our large membership, our representatives in office would not feel the same urgency to listen to us in this constitutional republic.
