We all know the radical Left wants to confiscate our guns, and we’ve seen just that in places like Oregon and Maryland where red-flag laws have taken effect. But just how far will they go? Well, Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., might just win the prize for stepping way over the bounds by threatening to nuke gun owners.

In a tense social media exchange, a gun rights advocate baited Swalwell, who has made his anti-gun sentiment quite obvious in the past. The Twitter user, identified as Joe Biggs, tweeted: “So basically @RepSwalwell wants a war. Because that’s what you would get. You’re outta your fucking mind if you think I’ll give up my rights and give the gov all the power.”

That prompted the following response from Swalwell. “And it would be a short war my friend. The government has nukes. Too many of them. But they’re legit. I’m sure if we talked we could find common ground to protect our families and communities.”

That unleashed a storm of rants, including one from Cam Edwards, host of “Cam & Co.” who said: “Personally, I have a bigger problem with an elected official blithely talking about nuking his fellow Americans than my neighbor owning an AR-15.” Another came from Charles C.W. Cooke, a regular contributor to America's 1st Freedom, who wrote: "'You don’t need AR-15s because the government isn’t tyrannical, and, anyway, if you try to stop us taking them we will nuke you' is my favorite of all the gun control talking points."

Ever mindful of putting his foot in his mouth, Swalwell has backed off his statement, saying he was being sarcastic. But the fact remains, he has no regard for the lives of those who he considers his lessers.

Intent aside, we’re inclined to agree with Edwards, and Swalwell should know that fanning the flames of the gun debate with such rhetoric will only make law-abiding gun owners more adamantly stand by their rights. And you can darn sure bet that if a Second Amendment supporter had made a comparable statement, he’d probably be in jail by now. Funny how that double standard thing works.
