Lucas Hoge grew up in the very small town of Hubbell, Neb. He started playing guitar when he was 12 and eventually became the lead singer for both a country and rock band and a Christian music group. The local residents of Hubbell raised money to help let him move to the bright lights of Music City. He released his first CD in 2002 and his song “If Only I Could” was featured on the hit show “Smallville” in 2006. Even as his career has grown, he honors his faith, family and love of freedom performing for American Troops in the Middle East, on the Armed Forces Entertainment Wrangler NATIONAL Patriot Tour and as the official spokesperson for the non-profit Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet. Lucas displays his love of the outdoors in his show “Hoge Wild” on the Sportsman Channel. To check out more, go to lucashoge.com and follow him on all social-media platforms! NRA Country’s Lisa Supernaugh got a chance to speak with Lucas and ask him a few questions.

LS: A lot of our NRA Country artists started young. What sparked your interest?
LH: I started out playing the drums about 7 years old, then quickly started learning to play piano and singing. I started playing guitar at about 12 or so. What sparked my interest was my mom and dad. My dad was in a few bands in his day, and they were always singing in the car wherever we went.

LS: Who got you started in the outdoors?
LH: My dad and uncle got me into hunting upland bird before I could even carry a gun. I would go out with them hunting, and since I was too young to carry a shotgun, they let me carry my BB gun!

LS: Do you prefer rifle or bow hunting? Favorite rifle or bow?
LH: I truly love them both in very different ways. I really don’t have a favorite rifle or bow per se, but I still love the old 54-caliber black-powder rifle I got to make in a high school shop class.

LS: You have been so generous with your time for our troops overseas; how does that make you feel?
LH: I love getting to hear about their lives and what they are doing for our country. Being able to say thank you to our troops downrange is something I will hold dear forever.

LS: If you had one piece of advice about the preservation of our hunting and fishing heritage, what would it be?
LH: Take someone out who has never been or maybe has an interest, but no one has ever reached out to help them. It really doesn’t take much to introduce people to it because once you do, I guarantee they will be hooked ... pun intended!

LS: What’s next for you, Lucas?
LH: I’m currently writing and working on a new series of songs and filming for Season 4 of “Hoge Wild.” I started a songwriter festival in Belize that kicked off last May, and there’ll be much more touring for 2023 and 2024.
