Surprise, surprise. After a mass shooting in Canada, the knee-jerk reaction by Mayor John Tory was to condemn ownership of guns in any circumstance.

“You’ve heard me ask the question of why anybody would need to buy 10 or 20 guns, which they can lawfully do under the present laws,” Tory told members of the City Council. “And that leads to another question we need to discuss: Why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?” At least we can thank him for his honesty. He wants all private ownership of firearms banned.

Well, Mayor, how about the fact that law-abiding citizens need protection—not just from a deranged killer with a gun, but it wasn’t too long ago that the driver of a van created mayhem on the streets of your city, killing 10 people and injuring 14 others.

And you’ve got to wonder what’s next in the litany of restrictive gun laws. Canada already bans concealed carry, it has limits on the number of cartridges that rifle and pistol magazines can hold and the country has a gun registration list. Those laws weren’t enough to stop a crazy criminal because—in yet another surprise—criminals don’t obey the law.

If laws alone stopped crime, Mayor, we wouldn’t have a crime problem anywhere.

But that kind of thinking never dawns on anti-gunners who take any chance they can to push their gun control agenda that is designed to do nothing more than to leave ordinary citizens more vulnerable to whackos.
