He was such an expert marksman that the title of his autobiography—which was completed after his death in 1961—was Mister Rifleman. This Army colonel also served as editor of Hunting Big Game magazine and contributing editor to publications including American Rifleman, Guns & Ammo, Amateur Gunsmithing, Sports Afield, Field & Stream, and Outdoor Life.
