Florida’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum might have been hoping to score points with the anti-gun crowd, but a recent campaign fundraiser has already taken some heat from people who have been victimized by violence.

Gillum paired up with Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel during a campaign event. You remember Israel, the man whose department came under scrutiny for not handling the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting as effectively as possible.

Well, some people—including the father of one of the Parkland shooting victims—aren’t happy with the fact that Gillum decided to use such a transparent strategy as he runs for governor on a gun control platform.

“Sheriff Scott Israel’s failed leadership is partially responsible for the death of my daughter Meadow and the many other victims who were murdered or injured at Marjory Stoneman Douglas,” Andrew Pollack, the father of 18-year-old Meadow Pollack, said in a statement released Wednesday by the Republican Party of Florida.

Florida, though traditionally a state that been adamantly in favor of our unfettered Second Amendment right, is in the midst of a tug-of-war in the race for the state’s highest office as Gillum seeks to play off of the February tragedy and has made gun control a top priority.
