You and I have never lived through a moment like this one. In the past several months, we watched an unprecedented wave of violence sweep across our nation—fueled by a deep-seated hatred for mainstream American values, and actively encouraged by politicians who openly despise America’s founding freedoms.
As NRA members, you and I have a battle-hardened understanding of what it takes to defend freedom—forged over our many years fighting in the political trenches.
America is at a tipping point. Almost everywhere we look today, the principles, values and fundamental rights that guarantee our freedom are under attack.
We are in a time of historic responsibility, a time of fundamental threats to our freedom and, yes, a time of great opportunity—if we dare to seize it.
When I step in front of audiences to speak, I always take a moment to look out through the lights at yet another diverse crowd of NRA members. I glance at individual faces and see men and women, youngsters and veterans, people of every ethnicity and from all occupations.
As the Democratic Party’s primaries play out and we move toward a presidential election in November, it’s worth considering the many successes President Donald J. Trump and the U.S. Senate, under Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), have had nominating and appointing judges who know it’s their job to interpret the U.S. Constitution and the law, not to behave as legislators with lifetime appointments.
The American people will only stand so much before they’ll get up with their backs straight and jaws set firm to defend their freedom. We saw this in 2016 when the electorate said “no” to Hillary Clinton, and therefore to the U.S. Supreme Court justices she would have nominated.
We all know the old adage that those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it. Sayings like this only stick around long enough to permeate a culture when they point to greater truths, as this one does.
